- lacma presents Zeng Fanzhi: Near and Far/Now and Then

Saudi Arabia’s Design Space AlUla transported visitors to the ancient oasis city’s natural and cultural landscape right in the heart of Milan’s historic design district, Brera. Designed by Sabine Marcelis and CLOUD, the exhibition showcased a captivating array of furniture objects and accessories, all in dialogue with the Fuorisalone theme of Materia Natura. Illuminated by a monumental lighting resembling a sun, the space glowed with a golden warmth, casting its radiance upon the yellow surroundings. Below this sun-like lighting, modular seating systems awaited exploration, inviting visitors to experience the texture of their fabric. This collaboration sought to explore the rich material expressions and traditional crafts of the region, offering reinterpretations of its biodiversity, expansive desertscape, and cultural customs through diverse perspectives. In april 2014, we launched a chinese edition, and designboom.cn is already one of the most popular online design and architecture magazines in mainland china.

This installation aims to highlight the relationship between glass and architecture, showcasing Lasvit’s expertise in artisanal glass facades. Crafted in Europe’s largest glass kiln, ‘Porta’ exemplifies how the brand adapts to the size and variability of glass while meeting the demands of architectural projects. Four professional-sized dance studios and a 100-seat flexible studio theater are enveloped in glass and provide a literal window into the beauty and rigor of dance training and performance. With a separate entrance and distinct architectural character, the light-filled dance facilities will have their own identity while harmonizing with the larger project.

During Milan Design Week, Porsche made a striking return with an impressive outdoor installation in the courtyard of Palazzo Clerici. Named The Patterns of Dreams, the installation featured a towering structure intricately woven with rope-like lines reminiscent of spider web climbers found in playgrounds. Collaborating with the design collective Numen/For Use, Porsche’s initiative, The Art of Dreams, brought to life a network of lightweight systems comprising thin metal cells. The installation’s skin, composed of netting and ropes, was fluidly spread or stretched, maintaining a taut yet flexible quality that allowed it to bend and flow with the weight of individuals. During the preview, the Dutch sibling duo Imre and Marne van Opstal, along with their ensemble, orchestrated a mesmerizing dance performance within and above the net.

Recognizing the significance of outdoor living in a climate as temperate as Los Angeles, the architects at Selgascano curated a fluid transition between interior and exterior spaces. A spacious outdoor terrace, equivalent in size to the interior, serves as a natural extension of the living quarters. Moreover, an innovative outdoor envelopment envelops both indoor and outdoor areas, providing shelter from the sun while framing the panoramic views. Designed by London-based New Makers Bureau in collaboration with Kampala’s Localworks, the 32° East Arts Center prioritizes sustainability throughout its construction and use. This new home for Ugandan contemporary art utilizes rammed earth and earth bricks, minimizing embodied carbon. Passive cooling strategies like strategically placed shutters and a sweeping roof ensure a comfortable environment for artists and visitors alike, reducing reliance on energy-intensive air conditioning.

Developed by viewpoint collection, the project’s interiors were staged by minotti los angeles and MASS beverly. Split across three floors, with indoor and outdoor installations, the House draws from the country’s design heritage while addressing themes through a current lens and a future-focused vision during this year’s design week. Addressing this year’s project with an intrinsic curiosity, creatives were invited to explore their emotional connection to the design process.
As of publishing the story, Aptera Motors is inviting interested clients to reserve one of the 53 Union Edition Aptera vehicles for 27,000 USD per model. Bjarke Ingels Group strategically orients The KUbe’s massing to maximize light and air for all three buildings. Winter garden bridges on the second floor connect the KUbe to Marvin and Chalmers Halls, promoting interaction between students and faculty. The ground floor features inviting entrances, while upper-level terraces offer panoramic views, creating a sense of openness and connection. WHOD design presents Debris, a balance tower game crafted from upcycled ocean plastic waste, transforming the traditional stacking game into a metaphor for environmental disruption caused by accumulating trash. This innovative approach not only fosters communal enjoyment but also prompts players to engage with marine environmental issues.
Recognizing the exorbitant construction costs in Los Angeles, the architects planned every detail, from dimensions to materials, to ensure cost-effectiveness. Prefabrication of components outside Los Angeles and their subsequent installation in a rapid timeframe exemplify the studio’s commitment to delivering exceptional quality within budget constraints. Led by architect Barbara Bestor, the team seized the opportunity presented by the adjacent promontory which offered an expanded canvas for the construction of a larger primary residence.

The exhibition highlighted the non-anthropocentric coexistence of flora and fauna, advocating for a world where human presence safeguards rather than deteriorates. A diverse digital database that acts as a valuable guide in gaining insight and information about a product directly from the manufacturer, and serves as a rich reference point in developing a project or scheme. Aptera Motors announced its expansion into the United Arab Emirates market with a special edition of its three-wheeled solar power car. The first Land Rover Defender to use BEDEO’s retrofit kit can run up to 247 km (153 miles) and can be fitted with an optional 50 kW fast charging capability, which can fully recharge the Defender in 90 minutes. Osman Boyner, founder and CEO of BEDEO, says that none of those who have ventured into making classic cars run on electric power through EV conversion and utilizing in-wheel motors tap into weight reduction and engineering refineries. Familiar in its simplicity, yet enigmatic in its angles, the audrey irmas pavilion stands in contrast with the historic language of the existing temple.
By conducting this research exhibition, we showcase 18 examples by designers I admire, aiming to share their thoughts on this subject and broaden our general awareness of this essential tool,’ he says. The installation takes visitors into the creative universe of the Italian architect, designer and artist, through the eyes of the French creator. The show serves as a sensory, immaterial journey into Mendini’s subconscious, with his voice and his laughter, mixed, distorted, and superimposed, transporting us into an elsewhere beyond gravity. In 2007, TIME magazine chose designboom as one of the TOP 100 design influencers in the world, one of just eight online publications to be so named. In 2013, the webby awards selected designboom as an honorable mention in the category of best cultural blog and in 2014, were nominated for a webby in the category of best lifestyle.
La Canaria offers a distant, panoramic view that stretches across the Elysian Valley toward California landmarks including downtown LA, the Echo Park hills, Silver Lake, and Hollywood. The ‘House Stepping Down a Hill’ takes shape with robust and resilient construction techniques, intentionally designed to withstand the threat of fire, which is all too familiar in this region. The PVC roll roofing, enveloping the entire roof as well as critical vertical surfaces, serves as a ‘cool roof’ that reflects light while providing a cost-effective protective solution for the high fire zone. The foundation of the structure is formed by durable concrete, while pre-fabricated metal trusses offer essential structural support. Occupying on a natural promontory, adjacent to Raphael Soriano’s iconic Lipetz House from 1936, Bestor Architecture‘s contemporary ‘House Stepping Down a Hill’ overlooks Los Angeles.
‘The building is essentially constructed like a giant roller skate,’ Director and CEO Sandra Jackson-Dumont told designboom. With forty-two inches of space on either side of the footprint, it allows for flexibility of movement, so that it can gently roll laterally in the event of an earthquake. ‘This will be one of the safer places where people can be in the city during an earthquake,’ she notes. The team at MAD Architects designs the Lucas Museum to lightly touch the ground of the Los Angeles park at only a few points. A central archway spans 185 feet over a public plaza to create a new threshold to Exposition Park which provides access to the museum’s north and south lobbies. Here, an elliptical Oculus hovers four stories above ground, opening a view from the public plaza toward the sky.
